Notes
A long standing duet team on the stage and in real life as well, Jagjit and Chitra have appropriately titled their latest album ‘A Sound Affair’ - a harmonious blend of voice and feel, expressing the depths of pathos, the heights of ecstasy, little nuances of love and caring - all of which makes a sound affair.
Jagjit and Chitra Singh are the pioneers of the ghazal wave today: a renaissance of the charming traditional love poem. With their own brand of ghazals, the duo infused into the fine filagree of lyrical structure and sensitive musical tapestry, a contemporary touch of modern orchestration. Their own trend-setting compositions not only launched Chitra and Jagjit Singh as the first distinguished performing and recording artists of ghazals, but their example served as the premier step towards the fame and popularity of several others in the ghazal world.
The ‘first’ have several “firsts: To their credit - being the first ghazal artistes to receive Gold and Platinum discs from HMV for their ghazal albums. Their latest album “Ecstasies” has just added the ‘Gold’ tag as well. Jagjit and Chitra Singh were the first ghazal artistes to sing at the London Palladium the first Asians to sing at New York's legendary Carnegie hall.
Their concerts and records have made them household names not only in the subcontinent, but wherever there is discerning Asian community.
