The Audio-Technica VM540ML sits at the very top of the VM500/600/700 Series, using a nude-mounted MicroLinear stylus rather than an elliptical or conical profile. The MicroLinear tip is shaped to more closely match the curvature of the cutting stylus used to master records, so it maintains contact with a longer section of the groove wall for lower distortion and more accurate high-frequency reproduction.

The cartridge uses a tapered aluminum cantilever and a low-resonance polymer body with a center shield plate to reduce crosstalk between channels, along with a paratoroidal coil design for improved efficiency. Threaded inserts allow simple two-screw mounting to any standard 1/2" headshell.
